Introduction
Welcome to the Virtual History Centre (the “Site”). The Site is operated and presented to users by the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria.
- These Terms of Use apply to all users of the Site, including users who are not registered users.
- Please read the Terms of Use carefully before using the Site.
- Children under the age of 13 must have a parent or guardian’s permission in order for them to register on the Site. For teachers registering students, the permission templates may be of use: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/management/lol/manage/use.htm
- If you are a parent or guardian and you provide your consent to your child’s registration on the Site, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use in respect of your child’s use of the Site.
- Parents are invited to read the Code of Conduct and answers to Frequently Asked Questions.
For Students
1. Access to the Site
By using this site:
- you must adhere to these terms of use.
- you agree with other rules and requirements that are specified.
If you do not agree to these Terms of Use, you may not use the Site.
2. Registration and Display Names
- Your teacher must register you in order to access the virtual world.
- When choosing an appropriate avatar name, do not choose a name that may reveal your real-life identity.
- HTAV recommends that you use a pseudonym (not your real name) as your display name, provided always that you should not intentionally use the name of another person.
- HTAV may refuse to register display names it considers inappropriate. Display names that contain obscenity, abuse, defamatory content, copyright infringement or brand names or registered trade marks may not be accepted.
- When registering, the Virtual History Centre asks your teacher to provide your given name and your surname’s first initial. This information is never published.
- You may not use another person’s registration without permission.
- You are solely responsible for the activity that occurs on your registration, and you must keep your password secure.
- You must notify HTAV immediately of any breach of security or unauthorized use of your registration.
- Teachers register students so they can access the site.
- When registering, teachers are asked to provide the following information: Name, school/institution email address, VIT Registration, school/institution contact details.
- Teachers must ensure that they have appropriate guardian/parent permission for their students to use the site. Parents/guardians should be made aware of the code of conduct and the nature of the environment in which their children will be working. A sample permission form can be downloaded accessed here. - Teachers should inform their principal / curriculum management team of their intent to use the site.
3. Code of Conduct
When you use the virtual world, you will:
- Treat others with respect.
- Use Good Words! No foul, offensive or hurtful language!
- Protect your privacy – Never give out your password or other personal details when in world.
- Remember that students and teachers from other communities will use this site and respect their wishes and privacy in the way you expect yours to be respected.
- Support other users – help others by sharing what you’ve learnt inworld.
- Listen to your Facilitators and teachers. Please follow their directions carefully. You can also contact support@virtualhistorycentre.com if you need help.
- Ask for support – If you have difficulties in-world or are concerned about another user, you can talk to your teacher or the facilitators. You can also use the Support Form to report the problem, and the Virtual History Centre Support team will assist you.
- When you use the virtual world, your content is moderated by the Virtual History Centre.
- The staff who moderate this content are registered teachers and/or have working with children checks.
- The Virtual History Centre will keep logs of chat activity and observe activity on the grid. Any user who does not adhere to the terms or code of conduct will be flagged and may banned from using the site.
5. Links To and From This Site
- This Site includes links to other websites, including those operated by other Government bodies, non-Government organisations and individuals.
- Many of these sites are intended for an audience and you must abide by their terms and conditions.
- Some links on this site go to some web 2,0 services like Twitter. These sites are for people aged 13 years and above.
- Each link to another website is provided by HTAV for assistance only. In providing those links, HTAV does not endorse or make any representation or warranty regarding the products, services or information available via any linked website, or in respect of the owner or operator of that website.
- HTAV is not responsible for any loss or damage arising from your use of or access to any linked website.
